Together with Lord Cornwall, you have been directing the East India Company for many years. Right to the end of his life, you were good friends with Cornwall, and you often sat up late into the night at the Lord's Cornwall, just like you, for a long time has been fascinated by mysticism business. Lord Cornwall, just like you, for a long time has been fascinated by mysticism and spiritualism, and has often sought the truth via services of the medium Poitier and his assistant. They have regularly been at Cornwall's house and conducted seanse there, often with you also present.
Now, following the tragic death of Lord Cornwall, you will temporarily (unless Cornwall's successor immediately immerses himself/herself into the affairs of the business) manage the company single-handedly.
The police came to you one day , in what was a complete surprise while you were working in your company's office, and arrested you on suspicion of murdering your business partner Lord Cornwall! Both the murder and this ridiculous accusation have come as complete surprises to you - to the best of your knowledge, no one has ever threatened him or you. You have always run the business honestly and openly, and haven't made any enemies. Following Cornwall's death, the questions arises - who will be your partner in management of the company now? Initially, Cornwall had named Kane as the child who would inherit Cornwall's position, reserved and unsociable young man, and would be an ineffective manager of the company. On this subject you once or twice even quarreled with Lord Cornwall.
Cornwall had doubts over this matter till the very end of his life, and seeking to resolve them, conducted a seanse to consult the spirit of his deceased wife. During the seanse, led by Poitier and the assistant Svenson, (you were unable to attend on that day), the ghost apparently spoke in favor of Jane. When Cornwall subsequently told you that he was going to change his will, you were very pleased. Jane is a clever girl and she has everything that is needed to run the business successfully. But now rewrite his will.
There are two other suspects whom the police have arrested - a student, Jacques Labor, and Henry, the servant in the Cornwall household.
You have know Henry for a long time and you don't believe that he could have killed the Lord. He has no motive for such a course of action, and he has worked half his near the Cornwall house a couple of times. You have heard, however, that Jacques Labor is a socialist who has been arrested for breaking the law on several occasions.
Unfortunately, you don't have a clear alibi yourself. At the time of the murder, you were driving from house to the company office on business.
